Theo Tân Hoa Xã, số bản đồ mới được xuất bản bởi tập đoàn xuất bản bản đồ Trung Quốc (Sinomaps Press), dự kiến sẽ phát hành rộng rãi vào cuối tháng 1. Ngụy biện cho hành động ngang ngược này, ông Từ Căn Tài, giám đốc Sinomaps Press, ngang nhiên nói rằng những bản đồ trên sẽ “nâng cao hiểu biết của người Trung Quốc về lãnh thổ quốc gia, bảo vệ quyền lợi hàng hải và các lợi ích biển của Trung Quốc, đồng thời thể hiện quan điểm ngoại giao chính trị của Trung Quốc”.

Một độc giả tên “intsik” phản ứng gay gắt: “Họ là những người tham lam nhất thế giới. Khi chưa ai nói về dầu ở biển Đông thì Trung Quốc không đả động gì. Nay nước này lại đột ngột đòi chủ quyền tất cả”.

Trước đó một ngày, Ngoại trưởng Kishida và người đồng cấp Brunei Mohamed Bolkiah đã bàn chuyện biển Đông và quần đảo Senkaku. Do Brunei cũng là một trong những nước có tranh chấp lãnh thổ ở biển Đông nên ông Kishida cho rằng cách thức ứng phó với Trung Quốc là một vấn đề chung của cả hai nước. Ngoại trưởng Brunei Mohamed Bolkiah nhấn mạnh sự cần thiết phải tiến hành các cuộc thương thảo hòa bình.
